Dealers of Salt Lake City new cars proud of Karl Malone's Hall of Fame achievement

When most people hear the name Karl Malone they think of basketball, not Toyotas. But the staff at Karl Malone Toyota wants to congratulate him for his induction into the NBA Hall of Fame and invites all Salt Lake City Toyota Prius buyers to do the same.

Averaging 25 points per game during his career and playing most of that for the Utah Jazz, Malone was even named NBA Most Valuable Player twice and one of the NBA's 50 greatest players. The Louisiana native, nicknamed The Mailman from his college days because he "always delivers", scored the second-highest point total in NBA history with 36,928 - behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

After playing 18 seasons with the Utah Jazz, Malone ended his distinguished career by playing one year with the Los Angeles Lakers. He retired in 2004 and was named director of basketball promotions and assistant strength and conditioning coach for his alma mater, Louisiana Tech University.

During his speech at the Hall of Fame ceremony, Malone paid homage to his Louisiana roots. "I'm from north Louisiana. I'm country. I love it," he claimed. Customers of Salt Lake City new cars, though, think of him as one of their own. Malone also was humble as he thanked those players who came before him. "I didn't do anything but try to play hard. I didn't have a motive. It wasn't about me."

Malone also graciously thanked all those whom he played with and played against for "making me a better player." Remembering his mother, he became very emotional. She had passed away exactly seven years ago that day and he said she was "mother, father and hero" to him. His love of family and appreciation of friends is likely why his Salt Lake City Toyota Prius dealership is known for friendly service.

"I always tried to do it the right way. I always tell all my friends and family, Try to live life the way you want to be remembered. Try to leave life better than you found it'," Malone added.

His jersey was retired by the Jazz in 2006 and statues of him and teammate John Stockton stand at the intersection of streets named for them. But as Malone says, "What good is success if you're not willing to share it?"
