Dealing With Stress

At age 56 and a retired hair salon owner I thought life could not be better

. My husband had also retired, and we had a nice place on a beautiful lake and would go boat riding or fishing anytime we pleased. Little did we know that our lives would change almost overnight.

My husband had 100% blockage to four major arteries and had to undergo open heart surgery. It took a while but he did recover, although he is not as strong as he once was. As hard as this was to accept little did we know more serious events were looming around the corner. My daughter was married to a policeman, and had a three year old son, and was six month's pregnant with her second child, when she discovered he was having an affair, and was planning to leave her. She went into premature labor and her son Andrew was born eight weeks early. As her husband had denied this was his child a DNA test proved that he was his. His girlfriend left him. He couldn't handle the rejection and took his own life. My daughter had a nervous breakdown, and Andrew being so small she couldn't handle things as they were. My husband and I adopted Andrew and have had him for three and a half years. Although we worship this child, life can get very stressful with a very active little guy keeping us both hopping. So I have to admit that some days become very hard to cope with, and on these days I have learned that I have to deal with my stress, and calm myself down.

I have several ways that I deal with my stress. I go to the gym and lift weights, and swim, I also go for walks, but my favorite and most effective way to relax and calm down is to go to my room, and lay on my bed and listen to relaxing music.

I have learned that we all must take the time out of our busy and stressful life, to take care of ourselves. After a career in Respiratory Therapy, and a hair stylist I have learned lots of ways to handle stress as well as being the best that I can be. I challenge you to find ways to help you cope with your stress It could be a yoga class, a dance class, a gym membership, meditation, walking or running, sewing, knitting or anything you enjoy doing. The objective is to find away to help you unwind and get rid of some of the stress you feel.
