Deciding to move your small company
Part 1 in a series of moving tips from The Small Company Moving Guide
Hundreds of thousands of small companies relocate to new locations every year. Most have outgrown their current space, while some are downsizing their operations and require smaller, more cost-efficient offices.
Still other companies seek a new geographic location offering a better quality of life while lowering the cost of doing business.
Organizations rarely get the chance to rethink the way they operate, and relocation presents that opportunity. Relocation should result in a better working environment for your organization, even if it is the result of downsizing.
Although moving is ranked as one of life's most stressful events, don't put off moving because of the hassle involved - take advantage of the relocation opportunity.
Preparation is very important to ensuring a successful move.
Without proper planning, you may find yourself with a copy machine too large for its designated space, a telephone system with not enough telephone lines, a brand new spacious warehouse without adequate shelving, or even worse, movers being paid to wait while employees pack.
Questions to Ask Yourself Beforehand:
Exactly why should we move?
How will this move benefit the company and its future?
What are the drawbacks of moving?
Can we afford to move?
Can we afford not to move?
Can we afford to lose some business during the transition?
Is it a good time to move? Are we gearing up for the holiday season or other period of increased production or sales?
If considering moving far from the present location, can we afford to lose some personnel who choose not to relocate?
Are we willing to offer assistance to employees in the form of advances, travel expenses, resettlement costs, storage expenses, counseling, home sales, spouse employment assistance, and personal time off to take care of their affairs?
Can the company and employees handle the stress that accompanies moving?
Is the company in a healthy state to move? Is there a history of indecisiveness, lack of leadership, high turnover, or other morale-related issues?
Where to move is the next most important decision you will have to make. Finding the ideal location is a time-consuming task.
Your search may take weeks or even months, whether you are looking for new space in your immediate area or a new site in another part of the state or country.
You must also decide if moving into an existing building or suite is more to your liking and budget than moving into a site under construction, or soon to be constructed and built to your exact specifications.
