Defeats for Fat Cats, Rising Rising Voter Discontent

Carl P. Paladino, 64, a career businessman from Buffalo

, defeated Rick A. Lazio in the primary battle for the G.O.P. candidate for Governor of the State of New York, throwing uncertainty into the entire Republican establishment not only in New York State but across the nation.

Paladino, one of the first Tea Partiers to win a major political campaign, is a break from the traditional Republican voting trends in New York. Traditionally, New York's Republican party has been successful by nominating moderate candidates. Now, however, the Republican candidate is anything but moderate.

Paladino, known for having sent emails with racist jokes and pornographic material, will provide Democrats with a vast amount of ammunition for November's mid-term elections and, therefore, faces a strong possibility of defeat next November.

However, a New York Times/CBS poll found that Americans are increasingly dissatisfied with President Obama and, more surprisingly,with their district's representatives in Congress.

The list of complaints that people have with President Obama and Congress is an exceedingly long one, but the primary reason appears to be the economy.

Unlike in 1994, when a Democratic president lost a Democrat-controlled Congress to the Republicans, this time around, the economy is stagnating and support for district representatives is weaker than in 1994.

What this will mean for the results of November's elections is uncertain.

However, it is looking increasingly likely that President Obama will sustain key losses in Congress to the Republicans.

Furthermore, there is a rise in support for political outsiders, including Tea Partiers.

What remains to be seen, however, is precisely what the Tea Partiers stand for and what their goals would be, should they rise to positions of power.These are issues that the Tea Party must confront, or else its rise to power will not be as easy as it may appear today.
