Depression in the Elderly
Depression is a psychiatric condition that can be very terrifying for both patient and the people that surrounds them
. It can happen to anyone, no matter what type of age, gender or lifestyle they have.
The elderly is the most commonly affected age group for this condition. Millions of old men and women suffer from this illness all over the world. However, elderly women are more prone to depression than old men. There are many different causes of depression in the elderly.
One major cause of depression has something to do with the changes that are happening to a person's brain as he grows old. As people age, they tend to acquire or develop different kinds of ailments such as heart diseases and stroke. When this happens, it can be difficult for an elderly man or woman to cope up with the development of these illnesses.
Another factor that can lead to depression is the realization you get when your loved one has a life threatening illness. Constantly thinking of these life threatening ailments can take such a toll on a person emotionally, physically and mentally.
Some studies also showed that another reason for depression may be due to the medications being used to treat different ailments. Some, if not many, prescription drugs for different ailments can increase the chance of an elderly person to acquire depression.
Unfulfilled goals or dreams, as well as, reminiscing the good old times may also trigger depression. Many elderly persons can get worked up whenever they think about how they used to be.
Unlike young individuals, elderly people also get stressed quickly. Being unable to do certain tasks may lead a person to believe that he or she is becoming useless.
Now, when you feel or an elderly person related to you is showing symptoms like pessimism, sleep and eating disorders, loss of interest in any activity, irritability, or loss of energy; you may help them by providing methods that can help them overcome depression.
