Designing New Bedrooms for a Couple
Whether you're newlyweds or have been living together for years, designing new bedrooms for two people can be tricky. You need to take both people's opinions and tastes into account and include enough space for all the important things. Each person may have different personal habits and need to have their area of the bedroom designed with those in mind. But having that both of you look forward to meeting in is essential. Take the time and do this project together to create the very best couple's bedroom.
A Big Enough Bed
Assuming you have the space for it, a queen size bed is the minimum a couple should sleep on together. If separate beds are needed you can opt for twins or double mattresses, but if the bedroom can handle it a king sized mattress is ideal.
The bed frame, head board and foot board should be something that suits the size and scope of the room. A high canopy bed is romantic and stately, but if the room is tiny the look will be wasted entirely. Think about the scale of the bed in the room and don't forget to account for tastes.
A simple sleigh bed or mission-style wooden bed are classic choices. Padded headboards are modern and contemporary and can be handy for those who like to sit up and read or watch TV in bed. Iron beds are also a favourite and come in many different styles and colours.
Lighting and Window Treatments
You want the lighting in your bedroom to be romantic, but with the ability to brighten up when necessary. Dimmer switches handle that nicely and lamps on the nightstands can also help.
Consider the weight, colour and texture of any window treatments you decide on. For a more modern look think about sheers or simple, neutral shades. Bamboo is a popular wood to use for shutters or horizontal blinds and heavy cloth drapes help to block drafts and bright lights from entering your sanctuary.
Flooring for Tired Feet
The flooring in new bedrooms plays a very important role. It will cushion your bare feet as you come out of bed and needs to be comfortable and easy to care for. Hardwood is a beautiful choice, but consider adding an area rug around the bed to keep it warm. Carpeting is a popular option, but if allergies are a concern it may produce dust mites and allergens that make sleep difficult. Think about which option will be best for your partner and you, as well as which will have the nicest overall look and feel.
