Designing your Band's Business Card

Designing your Band's Business Card
When you decide that your band needs some business cards or you need to update your current business card make sure that you give it some good thought before you just jump right in and get 1,000 of them made up. Business cards are still a necessity for any band (or for yourself if you are a solo artist). As I stated in a prior article about handing out business cards, they are very inexpensive to manufacture but one should still think about what your goal is with designing a business card.
Think about what you want to accomplish with your card. What style of music or genre does your band specialize in? For me it was fairly easy. Going back about 10 years or so, my steel drum band Steel Tropics had recorded our first cd. When I was getting the artwork done for the cd cover(I suggest getting going on this before you start to record)I wondered if I was going to be able to use the artwork for other items that it might work well for such items as posters, flyers etc. I looked at the business card that I currently was using. It was way too generic looking. Plain white with our band name on it. Not eye-catching at all. People were taking them on gigs but I knew that I could and had to do a much better job with a new design.
I wanted something that was very colorful but not over the top bright. The current cover for our 1st steel drum cd was perfect to use as the basic design as far as the artwork went. It showed a guy with tropical looking clothes on playing the steel drums on an island. Beside him there was a palm tree and a bright sun in the background. Just what I needed. Luckily for me I had a friend who was doing my cd layout for me and he said it would be no problem for him to make a simple business card layout for me from the current cd cover art. He did it up for me and it looked really great. I payed him of course as I always pay for work done even from friends. Hey they deserve the loot for their hard work and do a much better job when they get paid for their time and work. I showed the new card design to a few people and they all loved the design. Bam.I had it!
So the point is that when you consider what design to use for your band's business card try and incorporate what it is that you do and leave no doubt to someone as to what style it is that your band plays. When someone picks up our Steel Tropics card they immediately know that we play steel drum music. They look at the card, see the guy playing the steel drums and the palm tree etc. They don't spend 30 seconds looking at our card trying to figure out what it is that we do. And this should go for someone who is not picking up one of your cards right at a performance. If someone gives your card to a person, that person receiving the card should know right away what it is that your band does.
Also have the cards look like you spent some time and put some thought into the design. Don't use a generic card that looks kinda blah. Make it eye-catching without being offensive looking. Create a few different designs and get some unbiased opinions on your new card designs and see which one is the most popular. Sometimes what you may think looks great may not to the average person walking by who picks up your card. Try and put yourself in their place and think like them. What would you like to see in a card? Make them remember you
