. If the exhaust is obstructed, the unit will shut down to avoid overheating.
Examine the exhaust hose from the portable air conditioning unit to the exhaust location, usually a drop ceiling or an exhaust port mounted in a window. Ensure the hose is installed properly and has no kinks that would interfere with air flow. The hose should be as straight as possible as every curve increases air friction and reduces efficiency. Never extend a hose to reach a distant exhaust port. Exhaust hoses are already as long as they need to be and extending them increases air friction.
Unit Runs Continuously or Doesn't Seem To Be Cooling: The most common reason for poor portable air conditioner performance is a dirty filter. Air filters should be inspected and replaced regularly. If the unit is not functioning properly, the first thing to check for is a dirty air filter. Do not vacuum and reuse disposable filters as it is impossible to clean them sufficiently for efficient operation.
Check for obstructions at the air intake and exhaust. If the air is not flowing smoothly, the unit has to work harder to cool down what tiny air makes it into the system. Something similar to a desk pushed up against the air intake will suppress the unit's performance.
Close open doors or windows. You shouldn't have windows open in a room with cartable air conditioning and doors should ideally be kept closed, opened only when entering or leaving the room.
Unit Is Very Noisy: Portable air conditioning makes a certain amount of noise, which is unavoidable. But the noise level should not be jarring or distracting. Rattling or groaning is not normal, nor is a sudden increase in noise level. Noisy units are typically not level, causing undesired vibration. Check the unit to ensure it is on a level surface and is not touching other objects that may be vibrating.
Unit Is Leaking: Portable air conditioning produces water since cooler air holds less moisture. Some units are able to remove the moisture through the exhaust vent while others have internal tanks to collect the water. Check to see if the tanks are full and need to be emptied. Ensure drain plugs and tank caps are secured. When relocating the unit, always empty any water tanks before moving.
