GMAT versus GRE : Difference between GMAT and GRE

The GMAT score is used mainly by business schools to assess a candidate's eligibility for the MBA program.

The GRE score is used mainly by colleges and Universities to assess a candidate's eligibility for a Graduate program in a particular subject.

The GRE is designed and conducted by ETS ( Educational Testing Service), a non-profit institution whereas the GMAT is designed and prepared by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council).

The common thing in GRE and GMAT is that they both has analytical writing, quantitative and verbal sections. Moreover, the scores of both are valid till 5 years. Though used in other countries as well, both GRE and GMAT scores are used by institutes, colleges and Universities mostly in the US.

The GRE tests a candidate's proficiency in the following subjects also - Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Computer Science, Physics, Literature in English, Mathematics and Psychology. Whereas , the GMAT does not test a candidate's proficiency in these subjects.

The Quantitative section of GMAT requires more practice and effort than that required for the GRE.

The difference between GMAT and GRE is reflected mostly in the verbal section. The verbal section of the GMAT stresses more on logical reasoning. Whereas, the GRE stresses more on vocabulary. The Verbal section of GMAT has sentence correction, critical reasoning and reading comprehension. Whereas the Verbal section of GRE has analogies, antonyms, sentence completions, and reading comprehension.

The difference between the two is also reflected in the Quantitative section. The Quantitative section of GRE has Problem Solving and Quantitaive Comparison. On the other hand, the Quantitaive section of GMAT has Problem Solving and Data Sufficiencyu problems.

Another speciality of the GRE is the experimental section. GRE sometimes adds an extra section - an experimental section to your test, this does not count towards your score. This section is used by the ETS (Educational Testing Service), the non-profit organization that designs the test, for research purpose. The experimental section could be Verbal, Quantitative or Analytical Writing. You may not know which is the experimental section though you might know which type it is because there would be two sections of a particular type. The concept of the Experimental Section is not applicable in case of GMAT.
