Different Thinning Techniques
Thinning out hair-strands is one of the primary purposes of hair shears
. But in order for it to be properly done, there are three main techniques that a stylist should be aware of. These are known as point cutting, notching and slithering.
What makes these three techniques similar is that they all employ hair
shears in order to thin out and remove a particular hair fraction. But then, each thinning out techniques is distinct from another by the volume of hair-strands it can shed and remove, and by the angle that the stylist uses in thinning out the hair-strands.
Let us discuss each thinning out technique in greater detail.
The first one, which is called as point cutting, is used in order to achieve uneven hairstyles, or to enhance a layered cut. This technique is often used with mid-length and long hair types. For the stylist to appropriately thin out the hair-strands, the hair section should be held at a perpendicular angle with reference to the head. After this, the hair shears would then be used to thin out hair-strands in an inward fashion, this time, at a steep angle. This point cutting technique works best when dealing with curly hair types, in creating texture through adjusting the angle in relation to the preferred curl size.
The second one is known as the notching technique. It is basically done in a similar procedure as that of point cutting. The only difference is that this notching technique is applied to shorter, straighter hairdos. It is also great for creating spiky, ferocious hairstyles. More importantly, notching adds more texture and vibrancy to any hair type.
The last technique is labeled as slithering. This is typically applied to long, flowing hair types. Otherwise dubbed as slide cutting, the slithering technique entails opening the
hair shears in a perpendicular angle and sliding it along the entire hair length. This technique removes bulk from hair ends and gives a smooth finish.
So now that you have the right hair shears, begin your way in learning the right techniques!
