Different Types Of Nursing Degrees Offered At Online Nursing Schools
If you're looking to become a nurse, did you know that you can earn a nursing degree at an online nursing school
? Many such programs do require that you take some of your coursework on campus and your clinicals in a medical setting, but there are many online nursing programs today that allow you to take a good portion of your class work online.
If you're looking to earn a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN), you more than likely will need to take courses on campus. After all, this is an undergraduate degree program. You'll take two years (freshman and sophomore) to earn your college's general education requirements and the final two years taking your nursing courses. If you want to go on to advanced practice nursing, you'll need a BSN; nurses who enroll in two-year registered nurse (RN) programs are not eligible to take classes at the many online nursing programs that allow them to earn a master of science in nursing or a doctorate in nursing because they don't have a bachelor's degree.
However, if you take your RN training at a community college, you will be able to earn a associate's degree in nursing (ADN). These are a very affordable way to earn your RN license. You can then work as a nurse for a while and then attend one of the many programs that allow you to "bridge" your ADN to a BSN and beyond. Many of these types of programs are offered at online nursing schools.
Many online nursing degree programs are what are known as "accelerated" programs in that they allow students who already have a bachelor's degree in nursing the opportunity to study for their master's degree in nursing while continuing to work as a nurse. These programs often can be completed in less than two years.
In fact, if you have a bachelor's degree in any subject other than nursing, you still may earn an RN license and then go on to earn the coveted master of science degree in nursing, the MSN degree. Many programs are popping up all over the country at colleges and universities that allow you to train for 18-24 months and then sit for the RN license exam. Due to the intense nature of these programs and the need for you to learn clinical nursing skills, these types of accelerated programs usually require that you attend classes on campus.
However, once you receive that RN license, these programs allow you to segue immediately into an online nursing program to earn your MSN.
Nurses with an MSN or even a doctorate nursing degree really open up their career opportunities. Nurses with advanced degrees may become nursing faculty, move into public health policy, train to become family nurse practitioners (FNPs), or even work as hospital administrators.
If you're looking to become a bona fide leader in the nursing profession, you'll almost definitely need a master's or doctorate degree in nursing. The good news is that the many online nursing programs available around the country allow you to continue working as a nurse as you advance your knowledge and skills.
