Different Types Of Water Boilers

Any water boiler uses a heating source to raise the temperature of incoming cold water

. The heated water is stored in a tank and distributed on demand to showers, bathtubs, sinks and other water-using equipment. There are several types of water boilers available, such as storage tank boilers, tankless water boilers, integrated space/water heating systems and solar water boilers. It can be interesting to learn more about each type of boiler mentioned above.

Storage tank water boilers are probably the most common type of heaters. These systems heat and store water in a tank so that hot water is always available. As hot water is drawn from the top of a tank, cold water enters the bottom of the tank and a boiler heats it. Electricity, gas or oil can be the heating source of this boiler type. Energy-efficient gas-fired storage tank boilers may include additional design features, such as electronic ignition, which saves energy by eliminating the need for a continuous pilot light, powered exhaust, etc.

The next type of water boilers is a tankless water boiler, which is also known as demand or instantaneous water boiler. This system does not have a storage tank. It heats water only when users need it, thus avoiding heat loss through tank walls and water pipes. The most basic units of such boilers consist of either an electric element or a gas burner surrounded by flowing water. One can install tankless water boilers to serve a specific need near the point of use, for example under a kitchen sink. Depending on overall water usage, they may not have the capacity to supply an entire home with hot water. For this reason, people often use tankless boilers as additional heaters to supplement another water heating system.

The third type of water boilers are integrated space/water heating systems. They combine the household heating requirement with the household hot water needs, saving money on the installation of the total system. Users should install a single boiler, which will require only one combustion burner and one vent. These systems often have an insulated external storage tank with a high-efficiency low-mass boiler to heat the water, which then passes through a fan coil. The system then blows the heat around the house in a warm air distribution system, like a traditional stove.

The forth type of boilers are solar water boilers. They use the energy of the sun to heat water. Active solar systems, on the other hand, use pumps and controls to move the heated water from the collector to the storage tank. In areas where the temperature drops below freezing people usually use antifreeze. It goes through a heat exchanger to heat the household water. Depending on climate conditions and water use, solar systems can supply up to fifty percent of the energy needed to heat water for an average household. Since energy from the sun is free, solar water boilers can significantly reduce water-heating costs. These savings can offset high purchase and installation costs of a solar system afterwards.

Choosing the necessary type of water boilers, a person has to consider many factors. The most important of them are capacity, efficiency and cost. While considering them a buyer should balance the pros and cons of each type of water boilers in the light of his or her particular needs.
