Different Types of Ovarian Cysts – Know Which Type Of Ovarian Cyst You Have

Women are at varying risk of suffering from any specific health issue

. For example, heart disease occurs at a much higher rate than most women might suspect. However, the most bothersome issues for women are still those that deal with the reproductive tract. Because of how extensive and complicated this system is, there are numerous things that can go wrong.

Ovarian cysts are just one of the reproduction-related health issues that women worry about. There are various types of ovarian cysts; knowing how to classify a cyst can help ease your mind about the associated risk factors.

While cysts can sometimes need medical intervention, most are not as serious as you might suspect.

Dermoid Cysts

These types of ovarian cysts are extremely worrisome to most women. However, a dermoid cyst isn't really considered to be dangerous. They are, however, very strange. A dermoid cyst is comprised of tissue; most often, dermoid cysts have hair, skin, bone, teeth or cartilage tissue.

Despite the alarming nature of a dermoid cyst, they are rarely cancerous. If a dermoid cyst becomes invasive, however, removal is recommended.

Endometrial Cyst

These types of ovarian cysts are related to the condition of endometriosis. Endometriosis is characterized by abnormal tissue growth in the uterus area. If this tissue detaches from the uterus or begins to bleed, a cyst can form and grow. An endometrial cyst can form around the ovaries.

Bleeding in these cysts is common; clotting and rupture are possible. Endometrial cysts are often referred to as chocolate cysts, as the blood darkens over time.

Functional Cysts

This category of cysts deals with those types of ovarian cysts that are created during a normal cycle of ovulation. As your body goes through a menstrual cycle, the follicle prepares to release an egg. These cysts are developed around the follicle, either before, during or after an egg release.

Graafian Follicular- When a cyst of this type forms, it usually means that your follicle did not release the egg. Instead, the follicle remains enlarged with fluid and continues to grow. In some cases, the cyst will slowly fade as your body absorbs the tissue and fluid, returning to its normal function. However, a Graafian follicular cyst can rupture, which can be quite painful.

Corpus Luteum-Even when your body does release its egg on schedule, these types of ovarian cysts can form. Your body may actually begin to prepare for pregnancy, even though none has occurred. These types of cysts almost always disappear naturally. They may rupture around the time that menstruation occurs.

Either one of these types of ovarian cysts can become hemorrhagic. This means that blood vessels surrounding the functional cysts rupture and blood begins to settle in the cyst area.

A hemorrhagic functional cyst may cause pain; if the cyst itself ruptures, it is severely painful for most women.
