It is well known that the flange is the necessary part of connecting two pipes together through bolts or welding. In fact, there are many categories with different characteristics. And the vacuum flange is one of the particular ones. A vacuum flange is a flange at the end of a tube used to connect vacuum chambers, tubing and vacuum pumps to each other. Commonly, it has major types introduced in the following. It should be mentioned that as there exists more than one standard, maybe the same flange type are called by different names by different manufactures and standards organizations.

The ISO standard quick release flange is called Quick Flange (QF). It is called for some other names, suck as Klein Flange (KF) or NW. it is made with a chamfered back surface that that attached with a circular clamp and an elastomeric o-ring that is mounted in a metal centering ring. And it has a wide range of sizes which measured by the nominal inner diameter. As a result, some common model numbers are signed as DN16KF, DN25KF, DN40KF and DN50KF according to the 16 through 50 mm in diameter.

Then, a popular flange is called ISO flange. It is similar to the previous listed one at the point that the flanges are connected by a centering ring and an elastomeric o-ring. But the size available for this kind is from 63 to 500 mm nominal tube diameter, which is different to the Quick Flange. And this kind of flange is divided into two general categories: ISO-K (or ISO LF) and ISO-F (or ISO LFB) flanges. The tubes related to these two kinds of flanges can be joined by clamping the ISO-K side with single claw clamps which are then bolted to the holes on the ISO-F side.

Apart from this, there exist other kinds. A Wheeler flange is a large wire seal flange often used on large vacuum chambers. And the ASA are flanges with elastomeric o-ring seal and for both vacuum and pressure applications.

Whatever, the vacuum flange tends to be employed in many other fields in the industry. Thus, to have a general idea of the various types is necessary. It is wise to understand the different specifications and employ each type into the proper fields.
