Digital Home Entertainment With Your Computer As the Hub

Digital Home Entertainment With Your Computer As the Hub

Most people have their computer and their entertainment systems in separate rooms. In this article, we explore how to use your computer as the hub of your family audio and visual entertainment.

Today, everything is digital.

When you watch movies, you watch them on DVD or blu-Ray. When you listen to music, you listen to it from a CD or an MP3 file. All of this form of entertainment is digital.

With all of the digital entertainment, we need to ask: What is the best digital device that you have in your house? The answer is your computer. So, why not make the computer the hub of all of your home entertainment? We will look at how to do that.

Your home entertainment is really divided into the three things: TV, movies, and music.

On the TV front, most of you have satellite or cable TV and probably also have a Tivo box to go along with that which allows you to record all of your favorite TV shows. However, did you know that you can put a TV Tuner card into your PC and record TV shows without having to pay a monthly fee?

But if you do that, how do you watch the recorded shows on your TV? That is very easy. You can connect your computer to your TV using your VGA connection or, ideally, the HDMI connection that you will have if you are using one of today's best selling laptops.

Now, how do you watch movies on your LCD when you are controlling everything with your PC?

This is a no-brainer. Gone are the days of DVDs. With a standard broadband Internet connection, you can now download all of your favorite movies from the Internet. Many companies, such as Netflix, Amazon, and many more, offer this ability right now. Then, with your PC connected to your TV, you can watch all of these on your best LCD TV.

Finally, we are left with music. This feat is nothing since all of your music is probably stored on your PC right now in iTunes. When you bought your first iPod, you most likely spent a good amount of time converting your CDs to MP3s so that you can import them and play them on your iPod.

Now, if you are not playing them through your home stereo, you are short changing yourself.

To play your iTunes through your home stereo, you simply need to buy a cable with a headphone out that, on the other end, has the left and right audio connections. This will run you all of about $3.

If you take all of these steps, your computer can be the hub of your home entertainment. Not only is this convenient, it's downright cool!
