SEO Search Engine Optimisation is the process by which a company or individual can

improve the visibility of its website in the search engine rankings using a variety of techniques. The theory being that the higher the website within the listings, the more traffic it will get and the more sales / conversions / unique users it will receive.

PPC Pay Per Click is a form of internet advertising which comprises of bids being placed on relevant keywords. When banners, ads or sponsored listings appear for those keywords and are clicked on, users are directed to the advertisers website and only then do the advertisers pay their host.

URL Uniform Resource Locator; the name given to a web page address.

Long tail keywords This describes the decision to target niche keywords in a particularly competitive market. Not only should this strategy mean that the website gets more visibility but that for e-commerce sites, these should convert well as people will be searching for a very particular product or service.


Short tail keywords A term which describes highly competitive keywords comprising of only one or two words in total. Short tail keywords are often very difficult for fledging websites to rank for if they are competing against established and trusted brands.

Above the fold Refers to the content and imagery of a site that is visible on the top half of the screen, in other words the content you do not have to scroll down to see. This term was originally coined in the world of newspaper journalism and referred to important news stories that would appear above the fold of a broadsheet newspaper (i.e. on the top half of the front page).

Below the fold The area of a website which must be scrolled down to get to and is reserved for useful but not groundbreaking information, for example a set of contact details rather than calls to action, search boxes or navigational buttons.

Link bait Creating articles, content, copy, videos or anything that people will want to read, watch or listen to and then link to.

The idea is that external links to your site create authority in the eyes of the search engine which in turn pushes up your page rank and your position in the results.

Crawl This is the term used to describe how the search engines decide to order listings when a user performs a search. The search engines have software which allows them to find new and updated pages to add to their index and so the internet grows and grows.

Title tag This is the name given to the title of a webpage and is a very important SEO tool. The title tag should be no more than five to eight words long, contain relevant keywords and accurately describe what that particular page is about.

SERP Search Engine Results Page, in other words the list of websites that comes up each time a user performs a search.

CPC Cost Per Click; an associated PPC term used to describe the agreed amount of money which an advertiser pays a search engine each time a user clicks on their advertisement.

Cookie A piece of content which is dropped onto a users computer which allows websites to remember things like user preferences and items added to a shopping basket.


Page Rank The authority which search engines give to your page, this is based on brand and website trust which can be gained by high quality back links, user generated content and great content amongst other things.

301 Redirect This is a tool which allows you to alert users and the search engines to the fact that a page has permanently moved from one URL to another; this is used when you move your site to a new domain, when users can access your site through several different URLs and you want them to arrive at your preferred URL and when youre merging two websites and you want to make sure that links to outdated URLs are redirected to current pages.

Affiliate marketing This is an internet marketing practice where companies seek to increase traffic to their site by placing advertisements on relevant external websites (called affiliates), whenever users click through to their site from the affiliate site, the advertiser will reward the affiliate for hosting the advertisement.
