Digital Tv-a Clear Choice
Over the last few years, there have certainly been a lot of great innovations that have occurred in television
. Some of these innovations may have heard of, but not ever actually used. Other changes have affected virtually everyone, yet are more subtle.
One change that has certainly affected you that you may or may not have noticed, was the nationwide switch from an analog TV signal to an all digital signal. If you were already watching television via satellite, your signal was already digital. Whether you were a cable TV subscriber, or simply piped TV in through a pair of rabbit ears, digital TV has changed your television experience, albeit subtly. Well, not so subtly for the rabbit ears crowd.
For the millions of Americans who have been picking up their television via an antennae, digital television made that a little more difficult. Once all the television stations made the switch in 2009, a snow storm, or salt and pepper war, or whatever you choose to call it was the only antennae TV available, without the purchase of a DTV converter box.
The change was ultimately a good thing. A lot of people wondered why the government mandated the change. The answer is relatively simple-technology. Digital broadcasts are simply a more up to date, advanced technology. Digital signals are much more efficient than analog. Over long broadcasting distances, analog develops problems. The farther away you are from the signal, the more likely the possibility that you will experience problems with your picture. Digital broadcasting largely eliminates this problem.
Another reason that the switch to digital was made, was the fact that a great deal more information can be transmitted digitally as opposed to via analog. Digital signals can be compressed much more easily than analog. The data being transmitted digitally also stays more consistent, therefore eliminating many of the picture problems that were inherent in analog usage. A digitally broadcasted picture is always going to be better than one coming from analog.
Another clear benefit to converting to digital signals is high definition television. Because information is so easily compressed digitally, it is possible to watch television with a previously unimagined clarity. Imagine watching TV with a picture quality much better than that of a DVD. This changes the way programs can be viewed, and in essence eliminates the feeling that television programs are always a step below movies.
Ultimately, dumping the clunky, inefficient analog signal for digital was the obvious direction for television to go. It's pretty hard to complain about clearer, more high quality television.
