The South of Spain has something to offer hikers of all ages and abilities

. When it comes to geography, Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe and the second most mountainous after Switzerland.

Andaluca is a hikers or walkers paradise It is especially favoured by winter walkers because the temperatures rarely fall below 14C. During July or August however, Andaluca is off limits and no one should attempt a long hike in the mountains. The temperatures during July and August in the South of Spain can soars to above 40C and even 50C. Not even the most accomplished hikers will risk becoming dehydrated, or worse confused and lost.

On the Southern side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range is Alpujarras. Many who have visited or walked these areas will tell you how magical or enchanting it is. Alpujarras is home to medieval villages, which cling almost impossibly to the sides of the mountains. This place was the last stronghold during the Moorish invasion before the Christian armies expelled them by the end of the 15th century. It is a place that has to be seen to be truly appreciated.

However, even in the winter months with cooler breezes, it is still vitally important to be prepared. The sun is hot, no matter the month when its shining bright in the sky without cloud cover. An important rule of thumb to remember is the Costa del Sol and Malaga is situated only 18km off the coast of Africa that alone should remind you of the heat.

If you fancy a hike or long walk in the spring, a perfect place would be Costa Blanca translated the White Coast. This seaside bit of paradise, located in the South East of the Iberian Peninsula has much to offer away from the mountains and hills in the summer; but in the spring time if youre an avid hiker, Costa Blanca is by far one of the best locations.

In the spring time, you will find the mountains covered with wild flowers and orchids. This fills the air around you with the pleasing scents of rosemary and thyme.

One of the worlds most famous walks is called the Santiago de Compostela, or the Walk of St. James the Apostle. This walk can start at various locations through-out Spain and even France. However, you must decide how long you really wish to walk for. There are those who actually walk for a month straight to connect deeply with their spiritual side. There are several locations located throughout Andaluca where you can start your journey. But be warned, it will be a long walk from the Southern point.

On this very important journey, walkers make their way to Galicia an ancient city with a documented history going back to the 9th century. Pilgrimages (walks) take place all year round to reach the tomb of St. James the apostle. Maps are available online giving you information about starting points and listing hostels or parks you can camp in. Obviously you wont be walking straight on without food, water and most of all shelter.

Of course there are always some precautions that should be taken before hiking or walking long distances. The same rules apply to the South of Spain. So, before venturing off into the mountainous regions of Andaluca, having some sun screen, plenty of water and a bit of food is always recommended, just in case and to stay safe.
