Discover The Risks Of Chemical Peels

The risks of chemical peels vary depending on which peel you choose. There are a number of different compounds that will slough away skin cells. Some are milder than others. Here's a look at them.

Phenol

Phenol is the strongest one. They are strong enough to remove precancerous growths. The cosmetic problems for which phenol is used include deep wrinkles and blotchiness caused by overexposure to the sun or the aging process.

The side effects may include long-lasting redness, also known as arrhythmia.

Permanent freckle removal is possible, something that may or may not be considered a negative effect. Increased sensitivity to sunlight is a long-term side effect. The risk of certain kinds of skin cancer may increase due to the increased sensitivity if the area is not protected from the sun. Skin lightening is another effect that may be considered positive or negative.

Retinoic Acid

A retinoic acid peel may be used to reduce scars, wrinkles or pigmentation problems. It may be used alone or combined with other compounds. It takes about three days for the peeling to begin. The redness, itching and peeling are similar to what would accompany sunburn. Those are the general risks of chemical peels of any type.

Trichloroacetic Acid

Used for the same purposes as other compounds, but preferred for darker-skinned patients because there is less risk of skin lightening. The peel helps to reduce wrinkles, blemishes and heavily pigmented areas. The drawbacks are that pre-treatments with other milder compounds are necessary and repeat treatments are needed to maintain the results. As with other solutions, there is an increased sensitivity to sunlight. The recovery period is longer. Most people have to take several days off from work, because their appearance is unsightly. Minor bleeding may occur.

Milder Solutions

Jessner's Peel, Beta Hydroxy and Alpha Hydroxy acids are the mildest solutions. But, even those are accompanied by the common risks of chemical peels. None of the mild solutions are effective for wrinkles. Primarily, they can be used to remove accumulated dead skin cells and open the pores.

An alternative to the acids for removing dead skin cells and cleaning out the pores is to use a deep cleansing mask containing clay extracts called kaolin and bentone gel. The masks can be used every two weeks and do not cause unwanted side effects.

To reduce wrinkles gradually or to correct uneven pigmentation without worrying about the risks of chemical peels, you can use a good anti-aging cream every day. While their effectiveness varies, depending on the ingredients, they are good for your skin's health and might make you look better immediately.
