Dust mites are microscopic insects that are so tiny you can't see them with the human eye. Their average life span is between 20 and 30 days although the maximum is around 80 days. They reproduce so quickly that 100,000 of them can reside in a single square yard of carpeting. The females lay one to two eggs per day and it takes about 30 days for them to reach adult maturity.

They feed on organic matter, which consist mostly of your dead skin as well as your animals. They ingest moisture through their skin which means the more humidity there is in your home, the more quickly they will grow. They can be found in warm places such as your carpet, pillows, mattress, curtains, bed linens, slip covers on your furniture and even in your children's stuffed animals.

The protein in their waste is what causes a lot of nasal irritation because we inhale their waste due to the fact that they live on the pillows where we lay our head. They are the cause of a lot of allergies, hay fever, dermatitis, rhinitis and asthma. It's really disgusting when you think about it.

In the past I never thought twice about laying on my carpet but if your carpet is infested with dust mites you can develop red itchy bumps. This is a result of allergen that has come in contact with your skin.

It's nearly impossible to totally get rid of dust mites from your home but there are ways to drastically reduce them in numbers. You have to wash your sheets, pillows, bed linens, curtains, slip covers, anything with fabric including your children's stuffed animals every single week in very hot water in order to kill them. To rid them from your mattress it has to be thoroughly cleaned and then a plastic cover placed over it. Your carpets have to be vacuumed every week and your hard wood floors mopped so that the dust won't fly. It takes a lot of work just to keep their numbers to a minimum.
