Discovering Dresden by bike

Dresden is commonly known as the 'Green City' due to its abundance of wide open spaces and forests outside and within the city limits. But you can enjoy a different type of green tourism in Dresden when swapping environmentally damaging transport for eco-friendly bicycles.

Seeing Dresden by bike isn't only better for the environment, it's much cheaper too - and with cycle lanes being provided on so many of the city's major roadways (totalling 250 km), also a practical option for getting around in the city. Whether you're renting a bike in Dresden or arriving on a cycling tour from Prague or other cities within reach, Dresden's impressive natural sights and architectural triumphs can be enjoyed at your leisure when riding on your own terms.

One of the most scenic and prominent cycle routes in Dresden is the Elbe Cycle Path, which runs along both banks of the river across the entire length of the city. With no traffic in sight, there'll be nothing stopping you soaking up the rural ambience of the Elbe meadows and other scenery along the route, which runs to some 50 km in total if travelling all around the city. Carefully restored and signposted in the 1990s, the Elbe Cycle Path is a safe and enjoyable option for seeing the best Dresden has to offer, and for getting between major attractions and location.

You don't have to stay within the city limits to enjoy a great cycling experience though, especially when departing early from your Dresden hotels and taking the Elbe Cycle Path towards Altkaditz and beyond. Leaving the city to the west and heading to Flugelwegbrucke, you'll pass through the old village of Gohlis, and discover why this part of Germany is renowned for being so picturesque.

Cycling in the east of the city can be just as exhilarating, particularly when heading towards Heidenau and Pirna. However, you may find that some parts of the route have fallen into disrepair when venturing as far as Pillnitz and Sobrigen, meaning you may have to brave cobbled roads and embrace a more historical approach to travel.

By cycling in Dresden and not relying on your car, you're doing your bit to combat climate change and preserve the green city for future generations to enjoy. Joining a cycling tour could be a great way to meet like-minded travellers and discover more of Europe's scenic cities by bike.
