Discovering Greece On Foot: Where To Walk

Greece is renowned for its climate, beaches and friendly locals

, but did you know its also a great place to discover on foot?

Holidays to Corfu, and many other destinations in Greece, offer visitors a range of diverse and interesting walks. Holidaymakers are able to take in majestic mountains, coastal paths and even wildlife, including birds and mammals.

So why not jump off your sun lounger and pull on your hiking boots? Holidays to Greece take on a different dimension when you get acquainted with the terrain, plus youll be following in the footsteps of some of our most renowned and wisest philosophers.

Walks can be enjoyed in Greece and the islands all year round, although the height of summer is probably best avoided when temperatures can soar.

So where are some of the best places to walk in Greece? The mainland is renowned for being as good as other popular European destinations; your first stop should be Zagoria in the north west, which is one of the most remote places in Europe and also regarded as a best kept secret.

Along with two national parks, the mountains and valleys are home to animals including wolves, bears and vultures that have become extinct in other parts of Europe. The 20km long Vikos gorge is also a popular hiking spot.

If youre looking for the best scenery on Corfu, head for the west and northwest of the island. Having retained much of its traditional charm, its also home to the highest mountain peak. But if youre not one for heights, this area also offers picturesque old villages, stunning bays and the Corfu Trail, a dramatic 220km walking route that runs from the south to the northeast of the island.

And in case you were wondering, the best times to walk on Corfu are the spring and autumn.

The mountains, gorges and flora and fauna of Crete are well worth exploring if youre not a typical sunworshipper and prefer more active holidays to Greece. The island is also the most mountainous island in Europe, and there are many gorges to explore, including the famous Samaria Gorge in the Chania region.

Other Greek islands worth discovering on foot and accessible for all ages and levels include Alonissos, Andros, Lesbos, Naxos, Paros and Santorini.

We hope this article has given you some inspiration when considering active holidays to Greece. But dont forget, if you do end up on the walking trail, make sure you leave enough time for lazy lunches in traditional tavernas each day before hot footing it back to the hotel!
