Discovering Source Of Allergies Is First Step Toward Treatment
At any point during her life, a dog can develop an allergy to something ingested
, inhaled or that comes in contact with her skin. Similar to a 40-year-old discovering his allergy to wheat, or a 20-year-old finding out she is prone to hay fever after moving from Tucson, AZ to San Luis Obispo, CA, a dog can show allergic symptoms even as a 10-year-old. While detecting the source of the allergen may require an advanced degree in chemistry, it is far easier to provide adequate dog allergies treatment.
Symptoms of allergies in dogs can vary from sneezing or runny nose around cigarette smoke, watery eyes from tree pollen, diarrhea from foods with large amounts of wheat or corn, and loss of fur and rash on skin from certain flea treatments. It is difficult to know if the wheeze and cough you hear from Fifi is from chasing a squirrel up a hill, or because of irritating grasses inhaled in the attempt to catch that squirrel. Allergies in dogs can hit at any time in their lifespan and from a wide variety of stimuli.
It is not uncommon for a dog to play in the backyard for years and then later in life suddenly start experiencing a drippy nose and watery eyes during the months of March and April. When the pollen count for alders and Scotch broom rises, so does incidence of allergy symptoms in dogs. However, a correlation between pollen and another inhaled allergen like goose-down, found in dog beds or on the owners pillows can be traced in triggering a late-in-life allergic reaction. It is as if the pollen wasnt quite enough to make the dog sneeze, but when in contact with goose-down as well, there is a perfect storm of contributors that can lead to the need for an antihistamine or Prednisone.
Tracing the path toward the guilty party in your dogs allergies is difficult simply due to the fact that you cant have your dog tell you whats going on. If your dog could only articulate that when he eats his kibble he feels fine, but he feels sick when he chews on the grass outside that was recently treated with weed killer and fertilizer, the process of allergy elimination would be so much easier.
The various symptoms of dog allergies can appear to have multiple causes. Chronic sneezing can be caused by anything from pollen to the new goose-down bed. Vomiting can be triggered by corn in dog foods, but it can also be a reaction to a new medication. Whittling down the root cause of the allergic reaction, and simply determining whether its an allergy or just a one-off reaction, is a science in itself before dog allergies treatment can be provided.
