Disk Defragment - Important Tips Of Defragging Disk

Defragging disk is advisable to maintain disk and computer performance

. But a lot of people defrag the disk being unaware that they do it wrong and bring damages to the hard disk. Here are some tips that you should know before you do it wrongly.

1. Defragmenting disk is advisable but do not overdo.

A lot of people think defragmenting can reduce the amount of fragmentation. So they do it frequently. Actually, there is no need to defrag every other day. For the volumes which save the files that do not frequently experience writes and reads, you can defrag them two month a time. For the volumes which contains a lot of temporary, IE and download files, you can defrag them once per month.

Don't not overdo it! When you conduct defragmentation, the Disk Defragmenter will analyze every files in the disk and judge the file type. Then it arrange the space for all the content. The process takes up a lot of CPU usage and disk resources. And it can bring wears and tears to the disk. If you overdo it, you can bring damages to the hard drive.

2. Delete all temporary files before you conduct defragmentation

Temporary files are normally saved at folder C:WINDOWSTemp. They are the main cause of fragmentation. When you start defragmentation without deleting them. They will be analyzed and defragmented by the Disk Defragmenter.

But when they are deleted by Windows system, they leave incontiguous space in the disk. When other file are saved in those incontiguous space, there come the fragmentations. So you should delete all the temporary files before you defrag your hard drive.

All in all, those two issues are where most people make mistake when they defrag their hard drive. And in my opinion, Disk Defragmenter is not a really good and effective defragmenter. It cannot defrag the space that are encrypted or being used. That means it leaves some fragmentations in the hard disk. So I suggest you use other defragment tool instead.
