Marble occurrences are distributed in 26 provinces

, autonomous regions and municipalities. The explored reserves are largest in south-central China, making up 33.2% of the national total; those in Northeast China are relatively small, taking up 2.1% of the total. The provinces with abundant reserves are Guangdong, Hebei and Guangxi, each contributing over 100 million m3 of reserves; the reserves of Shaanxi exceed 90 million m3; Sichuan, Beijing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui and Guizhou each contribute 30 million m3. The existing large and medium-sized marble occurrences are mainly located in Beijing, Hebei, Jiangsu, Shaanxi, Zhejiang, Anhui, Sichuan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Guangxi and Guangdong. Deposit geology Marble deposits of China are widespread and can be found in all the major tectonic units, platforms and fold systems of China. The marble horizons occur in all strata from the Archean to Mesozoic but mainly in the Archean and Paleozoic. According to the origin, marble deposits of China may be divided into sedimentary marble deposits and metamorphic marble deposits, and metamorphic deposits may be further divided into those formed by regional metamorphism and those formed by contact metamorphism. According to the host rocks, they can be divided into carbonate-hosted and magne-sian carbonate-siliceous rock-hosted marble deposits. On that basis, according to the lithology of ores, marble deposits of China may be classified into six types, of which the limestone-marble type may include two subtypes, i.e. the subtype without fossils or special structure and the subtype with fossils or special structure. Other types are marble deposits in dolomite marble, marble deposits in marble, marble deposits in dolomitic marble, serpentine marble deposits and forsterite skarn marble deposits.
