China"s Taiwan Province produced 463,000 tons of crude salt in 1996 and 270
,500 tons in 1997, all being of sea salt. According to Mineral Commodity Summaries, 1998, published in the United States, the world"s total output of crude salt in 1997 amounted to 201 million tons. The first 5 salt-producing countries in the world were USA, China, Germany, Canada and India in successive order and the sum of the salt outputs of the five countries accounted for about 55% of the world total of crude salt. China ranked second in the world in terms of crude salt output. The salt products mainly consist of sea salt, well-mineral salt, lake salt,liquid salt, refined salt, powder-wash salt and iodic salt. Among them, the first 4 salt products are jointly referred to as the crude salt while the last 3 are processed products of the crude salt such as sea salt and lake salt. In 1997 China"s outputs of various types of salt products are: 21,637,000 tons of sea salt, 7,144,000 tons of well-mineral salt, 2,083,000 tons of lake salt, 758,000 tons of liquid salt, 732,000 tons of refined salt, 502,000 tons of powder-wash salt and 5,666,000 tons of iodic salt. As to the quality of China"s salt products, the well-mineral salt has the highest salinity, with a NaCl content of 99.15% on average and a low content of impurities; the sea salt and lake salt are approximately close to each other in salinity, both having an average NaCl content of around 96% and a varying content of impurities. Based on the statistics on the quality of the representative fractions of 27,083,600 tons salt products, the comprehensive quality indices are: rate of the high-quality grade-1 salt (H-1 grade salt) 93.79%, whiteness 41.75~85.00 degrees, NaCl content 96.83%, moisture 2.23%, insolubles 0.09%, and water-soluble impurities 0.86% including calcium sulfate 0.35%, magnesium sulfate 0.17%, magnesium chloride 0.26% and sodium sulfate 0.09%.
