In the west the summer is still unrelenting, although none of the humidity comes in the way of revelry. The south readies itself for the monsoon, and the rains help wash away sins and renew faith.

Although Diwali is an Indian festival, its colours have spread the world over. Indians who live abroad look forward to this festival with equal eagerness and make the most of it where they are. Most people look for an opportunity to come to India to celebrate with friends and family, while others ensure they send Diwali gifts to India in the hope that they have shared the joy with others.

Diwali practices are so unique that they bring out wonderful qualities in people without them even realising it. To begin with, the obligatory prayers instil the feeling of reverence and sincerity. People learn to share and be happy seeing others smile. This is a time to be thankful for your blessings and not aspire greedily. It is also a time to be with the family and affirm bonds.
