Check to see if:

The attic hatch is as heavily insulated as the attic

The attic hatch is weather stripped and closes tightly

Pipes, ductwork, and chimneys are sealed

There is a vapor barrier under the attic insulation

Attic vents are not blocked by insulation

Heating and Cooling Equipment

Recommendations:

Filters and replace them as needed

Change filters about once every month or two, especially during periods of high usage

Hire a professional to check and clean your equipment once a year

If your unit is more than 15 years old, consider replacing it with a newer, energy-efficient unit.

Air Leaks

Check to see if air is capable of flowing through these areas:

Baseboards

Weather stripping around doors

Electrical outlets

Attic hatches

Window frames

Switch plates

Wall and window mounted air conditioners

Be sure to also look for gaps around pipes and wires, electrical outlets, foundation seals, and mail slots. All caulking and weather stripping should be applied correctly, leaving no gaps or cracks, and in good condition.
