. If you've been contemplating looking at nursing schools for your further education, you're not alone. Nursing is one of the hottest careers going as we enter the second decade of the new millennium. But not everyone is cut out for the work: do you have what it takes to succeed in nursing?

Scholastic Requirements

Because of increased competition, it can be very difficult to get into nursing school these days. You need to have an iron-clad desire to succeed and the energy and commitment to work hard to earn excellent grades. You will be required to take a considerable number of science classes and should be competent in other areas as well. If you are already part-way through college and your grades are less than stellar, you may want to consider retaking some of the classes that will help you to get into nursing school.

Physical Demands

In most cases, those who are entering the nursing field should be in good physical health. Age is not necessarily the issue, but capability is. If you are energetic and strong, you'll be able to handle lifting patients as well as the sometimes-grueling 12 hour shifts that are common in the profession. Of course, not all nursing jobs are as physically demanding as those in hospitals.

Mental Strength

Many students just entering nursing school become squeamish and faint at the sight of blood. This is not an unusual occurrence at all, and most students overcome those issues in time. However, if you are terrified at the thought of dealing with all kinds of bodily fluids on a daily basis, then perhaps nursing is not the right career path for you. Not all nursing jobs are ultra-messy, of course, but they do require the mental strength to handle all kinds of difficult situations.

A Desire to Help

The best nurses are those who are empathetic and really care about helping their fellow human beings during difficult times. If you are a natural caregiver who also satisfies all of the other criteria mentioned above, you will probably have what it takes to succeed in nursing. If you have any doubts, you might want to consider shadowing nurses in a variety of different work contexts over a period of weeks. You'll then be better able to judge if nursing is right for you.

Nursing is an extremely rewarding career for those who truly love their work: going into nursing nowadays requires persistence and hard work, but those who have made it their life's career insist the rewards are well worth the effort.
