One of the most important aspects of building your IM career is that ever important list. If you own a list and have built a relationship with the people on that list, you will be able to market to them for years to come. No need to worry about taking a hit from Google because you have done something on your site that they don't approve of. The list is yours and no one can take it away from you. Seriously, it is almost funny the amount of times that I have read stories from internet marketers that look back and wish they had started building a list earlier.
The money is in the list, or so goes the common saying. I am not arguing this logic. In fact, it is completely true. Sure, there are many variables that go along with it, but you will never have the potential to earn as much money without a list of people that you have built a relationship with. So don't try and sell everything to them that comes your way. Give them value, and make sure you over deliver each and every time. If you make a good practice of this, many of these people will naturally start to look up to you and trust you. If you don't try to oversell to them, but instead give them beneficial information that will help them, you will have succeeded in establishing a true relationship with them, and they will be much more inclined to follow your recommendations.
People aren't stupid and they can see when you are just trying to sell them fluff as opposed to really helping them out. If you are doing a review of a product, make sure you tell them the negatives and not just the positives to try and score a sale. It is good business practice and at the end of the day you can feel good about yourself. So what if someone doesn't buy the product you were hoping for? You will have done something even better than landing a sale. You will have built your reputation as a trustworthy figure that people can count on to help them out.
More and more, I am finding that the people who are succeeding online are the ones that are delivering real value to their customers. But no doubt there will always be those who ruin it for others with their black-hat techniques and their deceptiveness, just trying to squeeze everything they can out of the consumer.
Enough about that though, because the message I would like to get across is about clearing your mind of all the rubbish that is out there. I will take a guess that if you are into IM and want to build a career out of it, you are on at least half a dozen lists from marketers that are making a killing online. Don't worry about how much they make. They have been at it for years and probably have this down to a science.
What you can and should do though, is take note of how often you receive emails from these marketers, and what time of day they sent these emails out, as well as what the wording is like. Big name internet marketers are known for their crazy obsession with split testing results so they can get the biggest return on their money. Nothing wrong with this, it is just good business.
Many times these emails that you receive will give you the opportunity to purchase something at a big discount and/or is time sensitive. Some of these offers are legitimate and some are not. But what I would really encourage you to do, especially if you are still somewhat new to internet marketing, is unsubscribe to the majority of these lists. It may not be logical, but I can promise you that it will do you nothing but good.
Once you stop getting bombarded with offers, and courses, and plugins for WordPress that promise thousands of visitors with the click of a button, you will allow your mind to escape the analysis paralysis trap. Simply unsubscribe from these lists, and make a game plan. The next time you get an offer from some bigwig IM person, delete it. There are only a handful of people that I stay subscribed to. This post isn't intended to be negative towards anyone, so I am not going to give any names of internet marketers that I feel are frauds.
So, back to the gameplan. It can be the simplest thing ever. Jump on your computer and open up your notepad or whatever it is you use, and write an outline of what you are going to do each and every day. It could be something as simple as writing one review for an Amazon review website. My point is, it doesn't matter how silly it may seem, what does matter however, is following your plan every single day.
It adds up, and before you know it, you will have more content on the internet than you ever imagined possible. Over time, you will begin acquiring backlinks from places that you have never even heard of, and you will naturally start to rank for the keywords you have chosen. Apart from this, your other job as an internet marketer will come into play here, and that is actually "Marketing" your website.
This will come in the form of submitting your site to RSS feed directories, article marketing, blog commenting, and a whole variety of other ways. But if you can escape the mindset of jumping from course to course, and set your mind to sticking with only one thing until you make it work, you can honestly call yourself an internet marketer.
Unsubscribe from any lists that don't provide you with any kind of value, and stick to your plan. If you can picture them as nothing but a waste of time, it will allow you to clear your mind and focus. And this, is what will ultimately deliver success to you.
