Do-it-yourself Home Lighting Techniques
It can be quite expensive to hire an interior designer to come into your home
, give tips on what might be effective and then to apply those techniques to give your dull and tired rooms a face-lift. Quite often, simply replacing outdated light fixtures and adding extra ones, can help turn these areas into beautifully modern spaces where you can proudly entertain, or efficiently work or relax.
First, look at the specific needs of the areas you want to remodel. Consider if there is sufficient light for the tasks that are carried out in each place. Remember, reading and the kid's homework are important tasks as well and proper lighting needs to be provided in order to prevent troublesome eye strain.
Areas, such as these, are well served by placing various lighting options around the room that will provide angular light when reading, or watching television. Angular light is considered the best option for reading, as it provides good illumination while eliminating irritating glare.
This is accomplished by combinations of lighting fixtures such as overhead, track, wall sconces and well placed lamps. A chandelier makes a nice, bright piece to accent the center ceiling of a living or dining space. Track lighting offers flexibility to your lighting needs as it can be moved and pivoted to wherever you need extra light. Wall sconces provide indirect light that can be pointed either up or down and add a soft, warm glow to the room.
Additional lamps are utilized to give extra illumination in dark corners, or in specific areas where activities are going on. These should be placed strategically to provide angular lighting, as well. Also, having several of these sources controlled by a dimmer will help to set various moods and save energy.
You should also identify work area which need more direct light for focusing on projects. Areas such as kitchens, bathroom mirrors and vanities, laundry room folding tables, home offices and garage work spaces are examples.
More direct light can be accomplished by adding under cabinet fixtures when wall cabinets exist that cause shadows. Open areas need additional light also which can be resolved by placing recessed puck lights directly over work areas, or installing spotlights over an area with two or three individual, rotatable lights which will provide more or less light as needed.
Installing lighting fixtures is an inexpensive way to brighten up your home and make it more functional, as well as warm and inviting. Most of these fixtures are also quite easy for the do-it-yourselfer to install.
