The Process of Installing Roof Shingles
These basic steps in installing roof shingles include the following: Remove and discard the old shingles (if necessary). Nail down 30-pound felt underlayment, spacing the nails 6 to 8 inches apart. Install a galvanized drip edge along the perimeter of the roof in the area where you plan to install the new shingles. Draw a centerline to the peak of the roof that is perpendicular to the drip edge. Install your first row (starter course) of asphalt shingles. Start the shingle layout by building a pyramid of asphalt shingle strips. Continue with this pyramid pattern of installing asphalt shingles until you get to the top. When you reach the final layer, install a ridge cap of shingles.
