The first thing to do is talk to friends, family members, and co-workers. They are an excellent resource, in that they can each give you the name of their dentist and what they think of the practice. As well as helping to point you in the direction of one you might want to visit, they'll also tell you which ones to avoid!

It is best to stay local to where you live, as it is never nice having to travel to and from the dentist before and after treatment - especially if it's likely to be quite a painful procedure. Not only that, but it is easy to put off going to the dentist if they're hard to get to.

Once you've found a few you like, you'll want to do your homework on them. For instance, do they have plenty of experience? Your oral hygiene is important, so don't settle for the newest dentist on the block.

Other things to consider are what services the practice provides. Many dentists will offer more than the occasional check-up, which may be extremely important if you want a wider range of services. It's much better to have all your dental procedures done by one dentist; a dentist that you trust fully.

Which brings me on to your dentist's character. It's very important that you get to know and like your dentist. The more you trust them, the easier the work they do will feel. Nobody likes going to the dentist, but try getting the motivation to go to one you fear or dislike. It can be difficult building a relationship at the beginning, but make sure you at least meet them before you register. If they make a good first impression and they come with a recommendation from a friend, then why not give them a try?
