Does Business Get a Bad Rep?

We've all seen what happens when money gets the best of us. Ponzi schemes, Enron, and even Martha Stewart (shakes head) had all become victim to their own greed. No matter how persistently we deny it, business is getting a bad rep. When we think of business, we think of money-then, when we think of money, we think of greed.

To explain this in better detail, let's look at this situation on a smaller scale. Spammers, scammers, liars, and thieves are infesting our most prized possession: the internet. They have turned what used to be a valued method of communication into a channel for them to stick their hands into our wallet. When did business go bad, and is there any way to save it?

Business should be about the customers-giving them quality information and having their best interest in mind. If, when you go to work every day, the only thing on your mind is dollar signs, you might want to reassess your priorities. True success is not owning a yacht or a big mansion on a hill, it's when are able to look back on your life and say, "I did something to make this world better". Money-hungry businesses only have one inevitable outcome: failure.

Mark Zuckerberg who is, as well all know, the creator of Facebook, had a love for programming and creating new software, games, and applications. He turned this love into a business, but not because he was driven by the financial aspect of it. In fact, in an interview with Matthew Nagowski, Zuckerberg said, "We're not in it for the money". Just look at how he turned out-Facebook is now the #1 social networking site to date.

I've been told that getting a degree in business isn't going to get me anywhere-that I should be a forensic scientist, or an engineer or something like that. First of all, I hate science and secondly, business is what I love.

Don't get me wrong here, there are many legitimate businesses out there that have their customers best interest in mind. There are businesses who worry less about the money and more about what they can bring to their community, their country, and their world. It these businesses that have the power to change the game, and build business back up.

Business is a beautiful thing. Entrepreneurs, small business, and home business owners all have a responsibility that many others don't. We have the power to change the world, as drastic as that sounds. Business may have a bap rep for now, but we must slowly build it back up. Everyone counts on businesses to be honest, trustworthy, and steer us in the right direction. There will be a time where business isn't driven by greed, we just have to get there.
