Does This Job Ad Apply To You?

If you don't read the job ad, how do you know whether or not to apply

? Too many people just hit the "Submit" or "Apply Here" button without really understanding what the job ad is asking for. If you read it, you can make an informed decision to apply or pass on it. If you choose to apply, there's a lot of good information that may help you set yourself apart from the crowd.Reading the ad is the only way to know if you qualify enough to apply. Having said that, there may be additional qualifications that are not in the ad that may result in you being eliminated from contention. The job ad gives you some and maybe not all of the scope of the job. If you have extra skills. Make sure you point them out.A good job ad is divided into 4 sections:- About the Company: This is a short paragraph or two that is the company's advertisement to potential candidates. They have honed down their message to a few sentences that identify who they are, what they do and what they are proud of. It is meant as an enticement to read on. If you don't like what the company is about, stop there. If you like what you've read, continue reading the ad.- Job Description: This is an overview about the position and what kind of person they want. It may include the soft skills, management style, type of collaboration, scope of responsibilities or qualities they want in a co-worker.- Qualifications: This is their wish list of all the abilities they'd like to have in one person. These days the list may be longer than in prior times because they are combining functions for expense reasons. It may also be because they can ask for more these days - and get it! The general rule is you should have at least 90% of the qualifications to consider applying. The 10% that you either don't have or are the weakest elements cannot consist of any of the premiere qualifications on the list.- Requirements: Education, certifications, licenses and years of experience are the most usual on this list. Some may say, "required" and others may say "preferred" or that knowledge of something is a "plus." There are some jobs that you must have the certification or license and there's no getting around that. Education may be negotiable even if it says that it is required. Coursework completed, seminars and additional training, years of experience may be able to be substituted for an actual degree. You need to be able to compare your experience with what they need for the job and show that you have the skills and knowledge to do it. Some hiring managers will insist on the formal degree, others may be flexible if you have outstanding qualifications. The tone, language and even the order in which the information in the ad is presented gives you valuable clues about how to respond in both your rsum and cover letter. Your rsum must hone in on the qualifications and requirements for the job. Qualifications are ususally listed with the most important ones first and then in descending order. Reorganizing your list of accomplishments so the ones most pertinent to the job are on top plus rewording your professional profile to reflect the qualities listed in the job description are key to aligning yourself to the company.Read carefully. Respond accordingly.
