Doing better, feeling worse

Doing better, feeling worse

Doing better, feeling worse

I recently read a work of renowned American political scientist Aaron Wildavsky in which he points to a great paradox of our times - "We are doing better and feeling worse" referring to the fallacy of our healthcare practices of today.

It can confidently be argued that our medical care systems are technologically more superior, our life expectancy rates higher, our immunity stronger, and our cures more accessible than they have ever been before. And yet, it is also true that healthcare has never been more unaffordable, lifestyles more stressful and diseases as omnipotent as they are now.

Even as we spend the maximum monies that have ever been set aside for healthcare yet, the cry for cheaper, mass-available and even more technologically advanced medical facilities is at its loudest.

While the existence of modern medical miracles' cannot be denied, neither can the ugly truth of the current climate one of anxiety and ambivalence; brought on by the unhealthy lifestyles we lead reckless dietary routines, polluted environs, populated spaces, strained relationships to name a few.

Is it of any wonder then that even with all our advanced medical facilities, we are still the highest health insurance buying generation to have ever existed? Has the maintenance of health been reduced to a mere exercise in risk assessment? Are our modern-day medical challenges beyond the reach of our modern-day medical care? Is it one of the most severe challenges that healthcare has ever faced?

I, for one, am inclined to believe it is. There is only so much that medical systems doctors, drugs, hospitals, can do mend broken bones, stop infections, eject allergies. That, contraptions can take only as much care as their programmed cures. That money can ensure treatment but indeed, cannot buy good health'. That the root of prevention, of fitness, and of wellness lies within each of us.
