Don't Let Old Fashioned Attitudes About Getting Older Steal Your Life Away

How do you see yourself in the last third of your life

? Strong and active with loads of energy, mentally sharp as a tack, rarely experiencing a sniffle much less a serious illness or disease? Add to that the ability and 'get up and go' to travel and enjoy leisure activities with family and friends.

Or do you see yourself planning your life around doctor's appointments and tests, planted in front of a television set between running to the drug store to try and manage some chronic disease, illness or injury that leaves you unable to fully engage in life and the things you love to do?

You don't have to answer that, of course we all naturally want to keep as much of our youthfulness, strength, health, vigor and vitality as we can, well into our later years but it is not all up to Lady Luck there is a lot we can do to make sure it happens.

Our bodies are designed to be active - very active, but unfortunately most of the physical 'work' has be engineered out of our daily lives to make them 'easy' and 'convenient'. Gadgets, appliances, cars and technology of all sorts are robbing us of the activity we need to keep our bodies strong and resist disease.

One of the biggest changes in our bodies as we get older is the loss of muscle tissue and strength. Our muscular system makes up 50 percent of our bodyweight so as we lose precious muscle from not doing enough muscle building and maintaining activity our metabolism (our body's engine) slows down. This can cause us to become more prone to gaining excess body fat which further accelerates the decline in one's health.

These negative body changes happen not because we grow older, but because we become less active and more sedentary as we grow older. Much of this comes from old beliefs and attitudes that as we grow older we should 'take it easy' and 'slow down'. It is a shame that society encourages older people to become less active at a time in their life when they need it the most.

So, we start doing less as that is what is expected of us and in turn we surrender our physique, vitality, endurance, stamina and power along with the rapid decline in our strength. Closely following is the decline in our health as decay and degeneration set in.

We should not conform to society's viewpoint of how we should age and instead we need to re-program our beliefs and thinking. While of course our bodies will change as we get older most of the negative effects of such changes can be minimized, and many times reversed, through a proper program of strength training exercise to keep our strength and fitness intact.

When our muscular system is strong and healthy all of our bodies systems are strong including the immune system - our fortress of defense. Our proper exercise regimen must serve as much of a preventative self care necessity as well as one to enhance physical performance.

Growing older does not have to mean slowing down and settling into a life without proper physical activity. Do not slow down - speed up instead. Do not do less - do more. Just because you are aging does not mean that you have to get old.
