Down Comforter Basics

Finding a quality yet affordable down comforter can be a challenge if you do not

know some of the basics about fill level or power, thread counts and the special treatments available. However, this knowledge can mean the difference between getting a great deal on a down comforter and getting a poor quality down comforter that will not keep you warm during the winter months.

Here are some of the basics to keep in mind when down comforter shopping:

- The higher the fill level, the warmer the comforter, and the fluffier it will be on your bed.

- Seasonal variations should be taken into consideration when purchasing your comforter. If you are looking to use your comforter throughout the year you may not one that is too warm. Many, however, prefer to purchase a lightweight down comforter for the summer months and a heavier one for the winter.

- The higher the thread count, the better quality the fabric used to make the comforter.

- If you would like to machine wash and dry your down comforter, you should consider purchasing a good quality microfiber down comforter. Many of these can be put straight into your clothes washer and dryer.

- If you suffer from allergies, try to find a down comforter that is hypo-allergenic. With these comforters, the down is washed very well, removing naturally occurring dirt and dust particles, making it better for those suffering from allergies.

- If you worry about dirt and microbes, many down comforter manufacturers offer comforter sets with a special anti-microbrial treatment.

- You should decide whether you want a plain, white traditional down comforter which you will purchase a cover for, or a colored comforter. With a plain comforter, you will be able to easily change the color or style to match your bedroom by purchasing a new cover. However, many find struggling with the duvet covers to be a pain, and prefer one that has already been dyed to match their decor.
