Driving Rules In New Jersey

The State of New Jersey is very strict in their driving laws

. It is very easy to have one's license suspended, be heavily fined or spend time in jail for violations. One can be given a ticket or be arrested for speeding, driving under the influence of liquor, hit and run, driving without a license and many other violations. Extra charges are imposed, in addition to fines.

One does not want to get their license suspended in New Jersey. Besides paying a $100 Restoration Fee, on must also attend a driving class, take and pass the driver's test and be on mandatory probation. In addition, there are court fines and, sometimes, required community service.

Each driving violation will mean points on the driver's record. If there is six points, they must pay a surcharge of $150.00. For each additional point there is a charge of $25.00. This is in addition to any court costs or penalties.

Any driver stopped for driving under the influence must take a BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) Test. Any one with a BAC of 0.08% is considered intoxicated. This applies whether one is driving an automobile or a boat. If a driver refuses to take the test, when stopped, he or she is transported to a hospital where a blood test is taken to determine the amount of alcohol in the blood. In addition, when the driver gets his or her car back an interlock device is attached which will stop the car if alcohol is detected.


One can be arrested very easily for speeding on their highways so it is wise to observe their speed signs. These speeds vary according to the location but are strictly enforced. WIM (speeding devices) are placed at intervals along the highway to catch speeders, resulting in fines according to the speed exceeding the limit. Statistics for 2009 show that 66% of the drivers exceed the speed limits.

The rules for drivers under the age of 21 are quite strict. If their BAC is . 01% their license is suspended and there are mandatory fines. Attending a driving program and doing community service is also required.
