The dual flush toilet kit was created in Australia to reduce the amount of water used in the common home. With conditions constantly bordering on drought, Australians commonly place a brick or solid item in the bottom of the water tank to reduce water usage. This is ineffective for flushing solid waste and not enough water is pushed into the bowl to clean the sides. Researchers understood the need for a new type of toilet and with a little time and a bit of government funding, the dual flush toilet was born.
Most common toilets have one tank and one volume. Every time the handle is pushed, the same amount of water is forced into the bowl and the solid or liquid waste is flushed down the drain. In a dual flush toilet, less water can be chosen when flushing liquid waste as opposed to solid waste. The actual difference in water used will vary based on the manufacturer of the dual flush toilet, but the liquid waste function usually uses 50% of the water needed for solid waste removal.
The liquid waste removal choice in a dual flush toilet is a rinse only option. The waste is pulled out of the bowl with gravity and enough water is spilled down the edges to rinse away the residual waste. The solid waste is flushed in much the same manner as the traditional toilet with the tank emptying to provide more water for bowl cleaning.
