Dual Functionality With the New Blackberry Torch
Dual Functionality With the New Blackberry Torch
Blackberry have unveiled a successor to its popular Storm and Bold handsets. This new addition however differs from others as it boasts the perfect partnership of a touchscreen with the Qwerty keypad that Blackberry made famous.
The Blackberry Torch does a pretty good job of incorporating the space consuming keypad and large screen all in to the one device. At 11 x 62 x 14.6mm, the phone does measure up larger than many of its competitors, although hardly any of these sport the dual functionality that this model does. Looking at the screen it is a capacitive touchscreen and responds well to the users touch. Capable of displaying a 360 x 480 resolution, the screen supports multi touch so the excellent touch and zoom method is present which will please many smartphone users. The screen measures 3.2" and beneath it you will find an optical trackpad, offering more precise navigation if required. The problem with many slider styled phones is that the mechanism is often poorly made but that is not the case on this model where everything feels well constructed. When activated 35 keys are displayed, but the touchscreen does offer a keypad of the virtual variety which is ideal for the composition of quick messages. An advantage to the virtual variety is that it features a very clever dictionary which accurately predicts the words you require as you are typing them.
Multimedia options are well covered on the Blackberry Torch. The model features a microSD card slot which is helpful for a wide range of media storage, be it photographs, video or audio. Cards up to 32GB are supported so you never need worry about a lack of storage. To get you started a 4GB card is supplied. The obligatory camera facility can take photographs at a 5 million pixel resolution which reproduces a good quality of image. Taking the shot is aided by the fact an autofocus facility is present, and likewise shots in dark conditions benefit from an LED flash. If you are more of a video fan, the unit captures in a very reasonable 640 x 480 VGA quality, which despite not matching the HD standard set by many competitors, still gives pleasing results. Blackberry have history for superb phones featuring full Qwerty keypads, and also one for not so successful touchscreens. This latest offering however gives the perfect blend of the two, meaning this model could have the most widespread appeal of any Blackberry to date.
