It is impossible to emulate without duplicating to some degree.

The problem is not about whether or not to duplicate. The question we need to answer is when is it beneficial to duplicate and when is it not.

If its a method you can learn how to master it.

You can be taught to teak techniques.

If its an idea you can learn how to promote it.

Duplication is as simple as doing things the same way someone else does.

Years ago I worked in a place where everyone was responsible for their own own tools. Most of us had the same types of tools and many were the same name brands. Putting our own I.D. on our tools was the only way to what belonged to whom. At the end of the day each of us could recognize our own tools.
