Durga Puja is an annual festival held twice a year, the first during the months of April and May and the other during September and October. This is mostly celebrated by the Bengali population but has expanded in size and is now enjoyed by almost everyone irrespective of the fact that you are not of Bengali origin. This Hindu festival lasts a total of 6 days and is in reverence of the goddess Durga (an aspect of goddess Parvati) and even her consort; Lord Shiva as well as her children Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha and Kartikeya are celebrated during this festival. The nine divine forms of Goddess Durga is represented by the nine types of plants called Kala Bou which includes a plantain tree and this also celebrates mother nature. Elaborately decorated pandols and artistically depicted idols of Durga and the exchange of Vijaya greetings are a few of the modern traditions seen during this period.

The first celebration of the Durga Puja in Delhi was in 1910 and since then the conductors of this festival call themselves the Delhi Durga Puja Samiti, a society made up of Bengali citizens who organize many of the festivals finer points and grounds. Close to 800 pujas now take place in the city with the most concentrated at the Chittaranjan Park and the place takes on the likes of a fair ground with the aroma of delicious Bengali dishes, popular Bengali music and the many pandols decorated in bright colours and lights.
