Dutch Fort Gate And Dutch Canal Remembrance Of History That Never Fades

Placed within the center of the city of Negombo

, the Dutch Fort is a remembrance of the influence and impact of the states that governed Sri Lanka before decolonization. Blending itself to the breathtaking scenery of the islands and lagoons of Negombo the Dutch Fort Gate is a popular tourist attraction. Built in the year 1672, the Old Dutch Fort Gate which is a true historic artifact, is now a part of the modern day prison of Negombo.

Ruled by the Portuguese before the Dutch came by, Negombo was one of the towns that lent itself completely over to the influences of the Catholic religion and operated as a Catholic fortress until a military invasion by the Dutch completely destroyed the fort in 1644. It was on the ruins of the destroyed fort that the Dutch built their unusual pentagonal patterned stronghold. Throughout the many changes that were made to the fort the Old Fort Gate continued to be a part of the structure. Even after the complete destruction of the fort by the British, they still chose to keep this magnificent door and to use it as the gate to the prison that was built in place of the fort.

The Dutch Canal is another part of the heritage left to us by a chequered past. Constructed by the Portuguese in the 17th century this man made construction commences from Hendala and draws its way towards Pamunugama. During the Dutch reign the canal was put to use as a supply route and it is still being used, though for less official purposes. A tourist of today can experience what it was like to travel the water by either hiring a boat, or take a leisurely ride on a bicycle. Cutting across Negombo this canal cuts its way through Sea Street, well known as Main Street.

Among the many Negombo hotels that are scattered throughout the area, the Jetwing Beach is one hotel that stands out. Nestled among palm tree gardens and flowing towards the beautiful beach that runs along the coast, this luxurious beach hotel is the perfect getaway. Boasting the unique touch of hospitality that is a trademark of Sri Lanka hotels this hotel features a spa, steam room and special treatment room among other amenities to make your stay a memorable one.
