Drum-shaped boat winches provide mechanical advantage for sailors as they pull on the lines that raise and control a boat's sails. Sturdy sailboat winches can allow a small person to handle a very large sail single-handed, and recent improvements in winch design -- especially the move to electric winches -- has driven the move toward larger sailboats designed for couples to handle by themselves.

A standard, non-self-tailing winch requires a second person to "tail," or feed the tail of the line away from the winch as it comes off the drum. A self-tailing winch tails the line automatically, eliminating the need for a second crew member.

Self-tailing winches largely have replaced non-self-tailing winches as standard equipment on sailboats, and represent a favorite -- although expensive -- upgrade for older boat owners whose winches are the older, non-self-tailing type.

EVO Sailboat Winch Evolved from Lewmar Ocean Winch Platform

Lewmar's popular Ocean sailboat winches, launched in the early 1990s, come as standard equipment on a wide range of new boats, and Lewmar is positioning its new EVO winches as an evolution from Ocean boat winches. The new range includes seven self-tailing winches in sizes 15, 30, 40, 45, 50, 55, and 65. Size 15 is single-speed, while the rest are two-speed.

Larger Lewmar EVO Winches Convert to Electric Winches

Boat manufacturers increasingly opt for electric winches as standard or optional equipment on sailboats 40 feet and up as sailors -- especially older couples retiring on sailboats -- demand the the ability to live aboard a boat in comfort while still safely handling their vessel. In many cases, electric winches provide the added strength needed to raise very large sails and trim heavily-loaded sheets.

To serve this trend, Lewmar is offering electric winch versions of the EVO winch for sizes 40, 45, 50, 55, and 65. Conversion kits and pre-wired motor gearboxes are available to convert manual EVO boat winches to electric winches on these larger winch sizes for owners who start with manual winches and later decide to convert them to electric winches.

The pre-wired gearbox offered for EVO winch sizes 40, 45, and 50 makes installation simple, since battery cables and a deck switch just need to be connected to the pre-wired motor.
