Eat More Small Meals Each Day

One of the best ways I have found to kick-start your metabolism is to eat more small meals each day. You may think that if you keep gaining weight you need to eat less and may start cutting out meals altogether. This strategy couldn't be further from the truth!

When your body doesn't get enough food on a regular basis, it will go into starvation mode, meaning, it will store up as much fat as it can the next time it gets food. You need to let your body know that it is not starving and that you will be able to get food regularly.

The best way to do this is to eat more small meals each day instead of a one or two large ones. I can't imagine very many of you out there have time to make a huge breakfast every morning; if you do, I'd like to move in to your house for a few weeks! But, I'd guess that the rest of us don't have a whole lot of time in the mornings to eat a big breakfast, and it actually works well with what I am about to say.

I know a lot of you think that it would be impossible to eat more small meals each day when you barely have time for the two you do squeeze in, but here is how I do it:

I eat a small breakfast.

Then I eat lunch around 11am.

At 2:30 I am famished! So, I have a small healthy snack.

(Sometimes I sneak a snack without my 5 year old seeing it after I get her home from school at 4:30!)

I have dinner ready at 6pm.

Then, half the time I have a cup of hot tea and a snack at 9:30 or else I have a snack before I go to bed at 11pm.

I must tell you that when I started trying to apply this technique and have that later evening snack I was worried that I was going to be doing more harm than good, but now my metabolism is going at such a fast pace that I get famished hungry by the time I go to bed and actually HAVE to eat!

The key here is obviously to watch what you are eating. If I had a huge bowl of ice cream every night, then yes, I would be doing more harm than good, but I choose healthy, lighter snacks to eat. No matter what snack I choose, however, I don't have a HUGE helping of it. I have a small moderate amount. One of the key words to "eat more small meals each day" is the word "small". Make each meal a little smaller than you normally would because your body is getting enough calories throughout the day now.
