This means, however, that they are the least noticeable devices, and therefore very popular for that reason. They have been said to cut down on wind noise interference since they are inside the ear. In-the-canal hearing devices are also tailor-fitted to your ear, but as the name suggests do not go completely within the ear. The device fits in up to the canal, but is still fairly unnoticeable. You can have more options and functions with an in-the-canal device than you can get with a completely-in-the-ear but even then the device is so small that they are difficult to adjust and work with. Like the first type, they are also good when speaking on the phone. Again, similar to first type of hearing device, these are good for adults who experience mild to moderate hearing loss.

Half-shell devices are also custom-fitted, and are like a bigger version of the in-the-canal device. These do not go inside your ear, but rather fill the lower part of your outer ear bowl. Since they are a little bigger, you get more available functions such as volume control and others. These are used mostly by those with mild to moderately severe hearing loss, and can likely be worn by just about anyone. Full-shell devices fill the entire outer ear bowl part and therefore are even larger. They have more features that the first two types, contain a larger battery, and are easier to work with. However, they are more noticeable.

Behind-the-ear actually fit on top of your ear, making them easily noticeable. They take the sound and direct them into your ear where you have an ear mold custom-fitted to retrieve the signals and direct them to your inner ear. Since they are the largest type of hearing device, they can also carry with them more functions and are easier to adjust. They are used by adults as well as youths and are employed for all levels of hearing loss.
