Education Involved With A Career As A Pharmacy Technician

Research has shown that people are living longer and

, with the aging of baby boomers, the demand for health care is ever-growing. Part of this industry includes a position as a pharmacy technician which is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand jobs in the world for highly skilled employees.

Not only are pharmacies found in hospitals and drug stores, but in the retail industry as well. Regardless of whether the chain is big or small, in a grocery store or a retail outlet, a niche is dedicated to the pharmacy in order to fill prescriptions and help customers select over-the-counter medications needed to make them feel better.

Various states have different mandates with regard to employment in this profession so it's important to check to see what's required in the area where you live. For instance, California requires a certificate of completion from an accredited school. This can lead to employment as an entry level clerk. For those who become licensed by taking the registration exam for licensure, however, higher salaries and more opportunities in the job market can be expected.

For those who are seeking a certification or license you should be aware that cutbacks in governmental agencies are extending the time it takes to actually receive the paperwork proving proficiency. As a matter of fact, what used to take six weeks can now take two to three months. For those who have completed their program and are only waiting for their license, they can still be employed as a clerk while waiting for the arrival of the paperwork.

It is expected that due to the responsibilities and demands of this profession, it will not take long before an associate's degree in science will also be required. Currently coursework in law, drug distribution, IV admixtures, pharmacology, sterile drug preparation, and many more are required. In addition, classes in computer programs associated with the pharmacy industry, home health care, and an internship in an actual business site are also required.

The length time it takes to meet requirements will depend on the school chosen. Some may require over 200 hours of what's called "externship" where you work in an actual pharmacy in addition to completing regular coursework at the same time. On the other hand, others may require up to 720 hours of training. This is because this field requires highly skilled employees who will ensure that the clients they work with are in safe hands.

There are many skills required in this profession. The ability to problem solve, multitask, and have exceptional critical thinking skills are a must. Additionally, they must have good people skills and be honest and forthright. Pharmacy technician is a complex profession that is currently in high demand. If you are considering whether or not this may be a profession for you, researching the eligibility criteria and offerings of various schools would be a great first step.
