In order to understand how flame retardant tape works
, you must first understand how the fire cycle works. As with any product that has a variety of manufacturers, flame retardants work differently and at different stages of the fire cycle so as to stop the cycle dead in its tracks. Having said that, lets look at how the fire cycle actually works.
Stage one, or the ignition stage, is where any type of energy source (heat, another flame, etc.) can ignite a combustible.
In the second stage, local degradation ensues as energy is transferred from the ignition source to the flammable material. For example, with a polymer, flammable gases are emitted by pyrolysis, which fuels the ignition source even further and advances the fire to stage three.
Stage three, or pyrolysis, is when the polymers long-chain molecules are broken down into smaller hydrocarbon molecules. When condensed, the result is carbon char, also known as char, which is an inert carbonized material.
Stage four is where flammable gases, which can include high, energy-free radicals and small molecules, mix with the airs oxygen. Once this mixture reaches an ideal point, it then moves into stage five the combustion zone.
Stage five, the combustion stage, is the point at which numerous exothermic chemical reactions occur, involving fuel, free radicals and oxygen, resulting in a flame or a larger flame, depending on the type of ignition source used.
In stage six, theoretically speaking, perfect combustion would result in the production of H2O and CO2, but in reality, that is not the case. Instead, it emits Co., HCN, PAHs, along with other combustible products.
A rather large amount of energy is released during the fire cycles exothermic reactions. This results in a direct transfer to the polymer, reinforcing pyrolysis and the cycle itself as it repeats.
Fire Retardant Tapes and Their Chemical Reactions
Each manufacturer has their own ways of producing fr reflective tape. Often times they are treated with various chemicals, which interact with the gases during pyrolysis. This specific reaction increases the amount of char, inhibiting the continuation of the burn cycle, which in turn prevents further combustion.
Extending the Life of Your Fire Retardant Tape
Fr reflective tape undergoes the same tests other flame resistant materials do, including firefighter equipment. While the tape may meet the set standards for this type of material, the actual life span of it relies heavily on the exposure to heat and fire over time. Furthermore, treating and cleaning flame retardant tape decreases the life and performance of the material as well. To ensure that your fr reflective tape still functions properly, namely if it is regularly used, it should be thoroughly inspected routinely to ensure that it still performs according to NFPA regulations.
