What's the difference between 'Education' and 'Training'?

Let's define each term.

According to Wikipedia, training "refers to the acquisition of knowledge, skills and competencies as a result of the teaching of vocational or practical skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies."

The bottom line training is teaching someone how to do something.

Education on the other hand, is defined in Wikipedia as "any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual."

The bottom line education is helping someone learn how to think, how to problem solve.

For example, providing an individual on the theory behind different communication styles, an understanding of how others communicate based on their style, and helping them understand how to read a situation to understand how to best communicate influentially with other individuals.

Education is giving out information and communicating to your trainees. Training is about practice and building skills.

Major differences:

First of all, training is not education. Education is generally measured by tenure: you spent a day in the seminar or four years in college. Training, on the other hand, is measured by what you can do when you've completed it.

Second, Training is doing. Training improves performance. Seminars don't train. While seminars are entertaining, they're generally not the best way to change behavior. Most of the content in a traditional seminar flows in one ear and out the other.

Researchers report that people remember 90 percent of what they do, 75 percent of what they say, and 10 percent of what they hear.

Third, for training to work, you must be clear about what you want people to accomplish when it's over. After all, the only reason to train people is to help them meet specific objectives.

Fourth, in training as in life, there is no free lunch."Free" training is often more expensive than no training at all.

Education is difficult to measure, while training is much more tangible and easily apparent. Training is focused on narrowly defined operational skills, usually relating to a specific job function or technology. Training is one aspect of what we educators do, but not the whole picture.

According to some authors the primary difference is that training is about behaviour: learning a skill and being able to replicate it, while education, on the other hand, takes training to the next level. Education is a process why which individuals are able to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate a topic.

Furthermore, training can be taught by a machine via learning modules, tutorials, and more while human teachers are the keepers of education "Education is a continuous process that requires continual support." In order to stay relevant and marketable in today's ever changing technology job market, tech professionals would be advised to never stop learning.

Training is about behavior. Education is about cognition.
